There are many ways of opening and closing jump rings. I have found that the best and most accurate method is to use two pairs of pliers.

Some people use two pairs of flat nose pliers, and some one pair of flat nose and one pair of chain nose pliers.

Again another option is to use one pair of flat nose and one pair of bent chain nose.

Whichever option you choose, you really must use jeweller's pliers because the insides of the jaws are smooth rather than serrated. This stops your precious metal from being scratched and scarred.

If your pliers are new, run your fingertip over the inside and the edges of the jaws. If you feel any rough spots, sand the edges with a bit of fine grade sandpaper or an emery board, otherwise these rough edges will scratch and scar your rings if they are left unfiled.
