Cleaning Copper

A number of people have asked how to keep copper from tarnishing. The simple answer is, you can't. Copper tarnishes relatively quickly compared to silver. Initially it loses it shine, eventually dulling down to deep reddish brown colour.

Some people are happy with their copper this way and use liver of sulphur on a finished piece of jewellery to get it to that deep reddish brown straight away. Other people prefer that bright pinkish shine of a first finished piece of jewellery.

So, if you are one of the people who prefer their copper with that bright just finished look, here is a solution to keep your copper bright.

Mix approximately a tablespoon of pure lemon juice (from a bottle is fine, doesn't have to be freshly squeezed) with a cup of water. Dip your copper piece into this mixture for a few minutes and then rinse. Your copper will be as bright as when first finished.
